The View from The Shard<\/strong><\/h2>

One of the things you should do in London is get a ticket to go up to the observation deck at The Shard.<\/p>

It's the tallest building in London, and the observation deck is over 900 feet above the ground, which gives you a spectacular view.<\/p>

There are windows all around, and when you look out them you get vertigo \u2014 not dangerous vertigo, but that feeling where your stomach drops and it feels like you're falling.<\/p>

The design of the building\u2014a triangle set on its point\u2014was inspired by the spires of London churches.<\/p>

Natural History Museum<\/strong><\/h2>

The Natural History Museum is a large, old-fashioned museum which houses what is probably the world's most extensive collection of fossils, dinosaurs, and artifacts of natural history.<\/p>

The museum was founded in 1881 and it has grown to house over 80 million items.<\/p>

It's one of the most famous museums in London, located in the heart of South Kensington.<\/p>

The museum is open every day from 10am to 5.50pm (last entry 5pm).<\/p>

Tower of London<\/strong><\/h2>

The Tower of London was once the main royal residence in England, and is now a famous museum and one of the most popular tourist attractions in London.<\/p>

The structure which stands today was begun by William the Conqueror in 1078 and has been frequently expanded and modified over the centuries.<\/p>

The White Tower, which gives the castle its name, was built around 1078 by William I as a statement of Norman power after his invasion of England.<\/p>

It is the core of the Tower of London that we see today. Later, in 1285, a new building, known as St Thomas' Tower was added to the castle by Henry III to commemorate his son's death in 1274.<\/p>

In 1414 a major fire destroyed much of the castle but it was rebuilt by Henry V in 1416. The White Tower is surrounded by other buildings including two chapels and additional living quarters.<\/p>

In addition to being a royal residence, the tower also served as a prison from 1100 until the 19th century.<\/p>

The most famous prisoner was probably Anne Boleyn who was imprisoned here before her execution in 1536 during Henry VIII's reign.<\/p>

The Churchill War Rooms are part of the Imperial War Museum, so you have to pay for the privilege of visiting them. But they are worth it.<\/p>

They are not just a time machine back to the 1940s, but a glimpse into how decisions are made.<\/p>

And the whole thing is so well-done that you feel like you're actually there.<\/p>

The basement rooms were used by the military high command during World War II, but were abandoned after the war ended.<\/p>

Churchill liked them well enough to use them as his personal quarters when he visited London, and after he became Prime Minister in 1940 he appointed their superintendent as his secretary.<\/p>

The museum preserves many of the rooms as they would have looked during World War II, with maps on the walls and telephones on every desk.<\/p>

There is also lots of film footage shot in 1944 showing Churchill and his staff at work<\/p>
